The trade turnover between Russia and India amounted to approximately $12 billion in 2021 – this is a record figure for all the years of mutual trade relations.

Russia supplies machinery and equipment, fertilizers, pharmaceutical products, foodstuffs, mineral products, metals, and products of the forestry complex to India.

From India to Russia come medicinal products, components for machinery and equipment, textiles and textile products, and foodstuffs.
India is quite far from Russia. Nevertheless, it is an important economic partner. with goods being delivered both to Russia from India and to India from Russia every year.
By the way, delivery times are of great importance in this case, since the classic transportation route takes about 2 months. However, our team has found a way to reduce the delivery period twice.
Transportation of goods between India and Russia by sea
If you look at the world map, it may seem that cargo transportation between Russia and India can be carried out not only by sea, but also by road – through Azerbaijan, Iran, and Pakistan. It seems that the distance is not very long – however, this is only at first glance.

We would not want to delve into the intricacies of all the processes – if you are really interested in why we deliver by sea and not via motorways, you can ask this question to our specialists when discussing the delivery, and they will provide a detailed answer. In short, it can be said that we do not transport goods from Russia to India by land due to the need to cross a considerable number of borders – at least, compared to how many borders need to be crossed when delivering by sea.

If you have previously dealt with transportation of goods from India to Russia, you can argue that the way through the Suez Canal, which is the main one, will require the passage of nearly the same number of borders. You would be absolutely right – however, the fact is that we do not use the Suez Canal, and this is what needs to be talked about in more detail.

Transit through Iran as the way of fast cargo transportation to India
GTL cooperates quite closely with Iranian and Indian agents in cargo ports. Signed contracts allow transportation to India by transit through Iran much faster than through the Suez Canal, not to mention road transport.

The starting point in Iran is the port of Bandar Abbas, from which cargo goes to one of the Indian ports:
  • Mumbai;
  • Chennai;
  • Mundra;
  • Nhava Sheva.
The port of Mumbai is located in the west of the country and Chennai is in the east. Therefore, we determine the port based on the final destination of your cargo.

As for cargo delivery to the port of Bandar Abbas, there are several different options. However, in most cases we ship from Astrakhan or Makhachkala via the Caspian Sea to the Iranian ports of Amirabad and Anzali. And from there the cargoes are transported by trucks or rail to the port of Bandar Abbas in Iran.

Our company has its own representative in the port of Bandar Abbas, which helps avoid any delays – that is why we say that we deliver much faster.

As a rule, delivery of cargoes from Russia to India by transit through Iran takes 30-40 days, as opposed to 2 months through the Suez Canal.
